Dawn and the Halloween Mystery (M#17)

Original Publication Date: 1994

Ghostwriter? Yes, Ellen Miles

Synopsis:

Dawn witnesses the getaway to a robbery that could result in Halloween trick-or-treating being canceled. She and the We  Kids Club organize a party for the sure-to-be devastated kids, but also want to solve the mystery. In a truly shocking turn of events, the robber who for once Dawn did NOT insist might be a woman is a woman! A recently divorced woman who's trying to earn money to be able to see her son (a friend of some of Dawn's sitting charges) more often, as her ex has primary custody.

Back in Stoneybrook, the Barretts and DeWiits finally succeed in finding a house that they all agree on. It will be a little cramped, but the kids are happy and the parents can afford it.

Greer at http://blog.stoneybrookite.org/ is diligently posting about the BSC Challenge. Here are my next answers:

Major or minor character you could see yourself being friends with: I think I could be friends with Claudia as long as we didn't send each other letters. Bad grammar really irks me when it's a lot in a row (as in, more than just typos and obviously not caring). I also think I'd get along well with Shannon.

Favorite Friends Forever book: Kristy's Big News is the most memorable storyline, although I also really like reading about Claudia and Alan's interactions in Claudia and the Disaster Date.

Least Favorite Friends Forever book: Kristy Power was too over-the-top for me. I don't think that censorship is a good thing, but this book and others in the BSC books that deal with are so heavy-handed.

Established or continued in this book:

The Girls (and Logan):

Claudia candy:

Dawn claims she doesn't care if her brother eats candy because that's his business. Right.

Dawn still has the ring she got from Thrash in her last mystery book.

Their Families:

Dawn and Carol are getting along better now, and Dawn's pretty much accepted her as a stepmom. Dawn also still owes her dad money for the plane flight back to CT.

Jeff's still into bad puns.

The Club: nothing new.

California:

It's Halloween, so Dawn's short visit has officially lasted more than a year...or only a month?

PSA Time:

Dawn and the members of the We  Kids Club enjoy chips with freshly-made salsa. Salsa is easy to make, but like cheesecake, it tastes better after it sits overnight in the fridge.

Misc:

Dawn says that every race is exciting to watch even if it's not the Olympics. Having done distance races, I would clarify that the last 400 meters or so are exciting, not necessarily the entire thing.

I liked Timmy but his Martian costume didn't seem that original to me. I thought Erick/Ryan was much more original with his Livesavers Roll cotume.

Major/Minor character you could see yourself being friends with - Claudia, because I love junk food, too (though maybe not to the extent that she does) and Nancy Drew

Favourite/Least Favourite FF - haven't read that series yet

Dawn's visit - book time, one month; real-world time, one year

You're right about the costumes. He even bought a pack of Lifesavers to be sure he got the costume looking right!

Dawn ends up coming home in the next Super Special which is set in December. She left in the early fall (late September, early October). So it was "really" two or three months, but she has two Halloweens, a spring, and a summer in California.

I just meant that I saw this as Dawn being one month into her six months' time in this book. (Though I now realize it was closer to two/three months because this happens at the end of October and I actually thought Dawn left the end of August/beginning of Sept. because she had to be out there early because Vista started the term a week before SMS and her parents wanted her settled in Cali. before school started. Or am I confusing this with book 88? Yes, I answer myself, I am, because they had started the school year when Dawn left for Cali. in Dawn' Big Move because the pretense for going to Kristy's for Dawn's going away party was so MA could drop off her math book so Kristy could do the math homework because she'd supposedly left her own book at school.)

However, it was more like a year in real world time because of all those Halloweens and spring/summers!

And speaking of Halloween, I can't wait until your post about the next book, Mary Anne Breaks the Rules (which happens during the same Halloween). ("Mallory said to call Alan Gray if I needed help being disgusting, so I did." -Vanessa Pike. Don'tcha wish you could've been a fly on both their walls' for that conversation?)

Ask and you shall receive. Once my daughter's down for her (in a couple hours) I'll get started on the next post.

Um, or down for the night and when I'm done with work...forgot that I needed to bake a blackberry cobbler and four loaves of bread today.

MMMMMMMMM! I love blackberry cobler. That was the first kind of cobbler that I ever had. My (great) Aunt Irene made it when I went down to her place (with my grandparents) to visit one summer.

And nothing beats fresh-baked bread!

I'm sure they were/are/will be delicious.

Yep, they all turned out well (and took a long time!). We had parties at my dad's and mom's sides this afternoon both. My grandpa quickly hid the bread (it's his mother's recipe; he gets loaves for Father's Day, his birthday, and Christmas) so no one else would find it. And people at my mom's side seemed to like the cobbler. I'd picked the berries over the summer, since they're a weed here, and froze several cups.

Now I have some more bread dough rising, because my husband got "jealous" that Grandpa got four loaves and he got none.
