Acknowledging the Ghostwriters

A lot of us didn't realize until adulthood that Ann M. Martin employed a plethora of ghostwriters. In retrospect, it makes sense considering there were two books a month being published at some points! Martin outlined every book and looked over the final products, but how many did each person actually write?

I can't believe that little kid me never thought about how impossible it would have been for Ann to write all those books herself. I guess I must have thought she was some sort of superhuman? I'm going to miss your BSC posts but I am excited to see the American Girl books- though if Samantha wasn't your favorite, we might have a problem ;D

Of course Samantha is my favorite! That's one reason I'm saving her posts for December: her Christmas story is one of the best books, in my opinion.

AL Singer is also Lerangis :) The name comes from the anagram of Lerangis!

I never knew that! Thanks, Helen!

This post was so informative!I loved your descriptions of the authors and it appears I have a lot to thank Ellen Miles for as the mysteries/spooky ones are my favourites.
I can't believe Mary Ann and too many boys is the bestselling Babysitters Club book. I thought it would have been Kristy's great idea.

Thank you, Mimi. I had fun coming up with the titles. The one for Ellen Miles pretty much wrote itself, and I figured I should keep going. :)

I really don't understand why Mary Anne and Too Many Boys was the best-selling (as of 2000). It wasn't that great of a book, in my opinion, although it wasn't bad. I would have an earlier one, too, or one of the Super Specials.

This is awesome, thanks so much for compiling this information -- and for putting this blog together! I've been rereading all the books in order (my first reread in years!) as my daughter reads them for the first time, and I was trying to figure out a logical stopping point since, even secondhand, I can't afford to buy everything (I only ever owned up to book 34 or so when I was younger). The best thing, I thought, would be to read all the way up to the point when the ghostwriters took over completely. That still leaves us about 50 books plus all the super specials -- and Karen's Little Sister, which I didn't read when I was a kid. Your blog has been super helpful as I compile our lists!

Thanks, Deniz! Your daughter might like the Graphic Novels; mine has been reading both the chapter books and those.
